It’s incredibly surreal, with environments inspired by the artwork of HR Giger and Zdzislaw Beksinski (two artists I’ve mentioned here before). Tormentum: Dark Sorrow is a visually rich point and click adventure. A bit of fun for those who have read a few of the SCP articles, very strange for those who haven’t. The foundation supposedly contains dangerous objects and beings to protect the rest of the world, but while you’re there, there is a disastrous containment breach.

This neat little game is by an indie developer, and follows a “Class-D” personnel (which apparently is a prisoner taken from death-row to can work at the foundation to postpone execution). If you know anything about Creepypasta, you’ll have heard about the SCP Foundation. Not to mention the amazing attention to detail and exquisite soundtrack of compiled tunes from the 1950s. There are cults, supernatural oddities and terrifying environments to enjoy.
TORMENTUM DARK SORROW TORTURE CHAMBER FULL
Bioshock 1 and 2 however, capture a very claustrophobic, underwater atmosphere full of crazed drug addicts and giant ‘Big Daddies’. I’m sure there is someone who found Bioshock Infinite scary but I definitely didn’t. Also has that sweet Akira Yamaoka soundtrack! The highlight of the game is going through the haunted house, with a spooky narrator to guide you through. I enjoy Heather as a protagonist and the special carnival-style visuals tailored just for her. However, the 3rd is my personal favourite. There are plenty of games to choose from in the Silent Hill series, and the first two are arguably the best.
TORMENTUM DARK SORROW TORTURE CHAMBER SERIES
The story is very eerie and surreal, following a series of very bizarre experiments gone wrong. Similar to the insanely popular “Amnesia” games from the same developer, Penumbra has no proper combat and focuses on atmosphere and story for it’s spookiness. There are 4 games in the Penumbra series, Overture, Black Plague, Requiem and Necrologue. The following are my personal favourite horror games the ones I have enjoyed playing/watching the most. I think games can create a deeper sense of immersion (if done right) than movies can, and can make for a very scary experience indeed. One of my personal favourite places to find spooks is through video games. I’ve been focusing a lot on movies this glorious Halloween season, but there are plenty of other places to find your spooks.
